Markets extend morning losses amid tariff concerns; Sensex down 585 points

Markets continued their downward trajectory in afternoon trade Tuesday, with benchmark indices extending morning losses as investors remained cautious ahead of .

The traded 585.42 points lower at 81,050.49, declining 0.72 per cent from its previous close of 81,635.91. The index opened at 81,377.39, showing weakness from the opening bell. The dropped 177.20 points to 24,790.55, down 0.71 per cent from its previous close of 24,967.75, after opening at 24,899.50.

Market breadth remained weak with 2,725 stocks declining against 1,212 advancing stocks on BSE, while 163 stocks remained unchanged. A total of 4,100 stocks were traded during the session. The volatility was evident with 87 stocks hitting 52-week highs while 74 touched 52-week lows. Circuit breakers were active with 168 stocks in upper circuit and 164 in lower circuit.

Among Nifty 50 constituents,emerged as the top gainer, rising 2.41 per cent to ₹6,135.00. gained 2.26 per cent to ₹2,691.00, while advanced 1.73 per cent to ₹1,173.00. climbed 1.69 per cent to ₹14,696.00, and added 1.02 per cent to ₹2,518.30.

On the losing side, led declines with a 3.12 per cent drop to ₹601.50. fell 2.73 per cent to ₹1,611.50, while declined 1.93 per cent to ₹156.55. dropped 1.73 per cent to ₹365.60, and slipped 1.62 per cent to ₹886.25.

Sectoral indices reflected the broader market weakness. Nifty Next 50 declined 564.50 points to 67,215.60, falling 0.83 per cent. Nifty Financial Services dropped 285.05 points to 26,050.40, down 1.08 per cent. Nifty Bank fell 559.75 points to 54,626.35, declining 1.02 per cent, while Nifty Midcap 100 shed 658.60 points to 57,121.40, losing 1.14 per cent.



Trading volumes remained elevated as investors monitored developments regarding the 50 per cent US tariffs on Indian goods. The market sentiment reflected concerns over potential economic impact, with analysts warning that even a 25 per cent tariff could affect GDP growth by 0.2-0.4 per cent.
