With just one day left before the December 31 deadline, taxpayers are running out of time to link their Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar. The Income Tax Department has made it clear that this linking is compulsory for most individuals, and missing the deadline can lead to serious financial and tax-related troubles.
The government has been urging taxpayers to complete this process well in advance, but many are still
PAN–Aadhaar linking is now a mandatory requirement under Indian tax laws.
According to a notification issued by the Income Tax Department on April 3, 2025, individuals whose PAN was issued using an Aadhaar number before October 1, 2024, must complete the linking process by December 31, 2025.
If the PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by the deadline, the PAN may become inoperative from January 1, 2026.
Failing to link PAN with Aadhaar on time can create multiple problems. An inoperative PAN means you may not be able to file your income tax return or receive any pending tax refund. Banks and financial institutions may also refuse transactions, like opening bank accounts, and carrying out high-value transactions that require a valid PAN.
Moreover, those who attempt to link PAN and Aadhaar after the deadline will also have to before the process can be completed.
While the rule applies to most people, the
The Aadhaar–PAN linking requirement does not apply to individuals residing in Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, or Meghalaya. It is also not mandatory for non-residents under the Income-tax Act, 1961.
Senior citizens aged 80 years or more at any time during the previous year are also exempt.
Additionally, individuals who are not citizens of India are not required to link PAN with Aadhaar.
Linking PAN and Aadhaar is a simple process and can be done online through the income tax e-filing portal. Both registered and unregistered users can complete the process without logging in. The ‘Link Aadhaar’ option is available as a quick link on the home page of the e-filing website.
With only one day remaining, taxpayers who are required to link PAN and Aadhaar should act immediately to avoid penalties and future disruptions. For most people, a few minutes today can prevent major financial inconvenience tomorrow.
