Sensex, Nifty flat in mid-session, Coal India, Shriram Finance lead gainers

Domestic markets witnessed volatility on Tuesday after a two-day rally as investors booked profits, remained cautious ahead of key global cues, and reacted to mixed signals from Asian markets and select heavyweight stocks.

Market experts believed that the trading volumes would remain subdued amid the holiday-shortened week. Market will be closed on Thursday, on account of Christmas.

dipped by 10.87 pts or 0.01 per cent to 85,556.61 at 1.08 pm after hitting an intraday high of 85,704.93. 50 inched up 13.10 pts or 0.05 per cent to 26,185.50. It scaled to an intraday high of 26,206.55.

Smallcap index rose by 0.42 per cent, while midcap index was flat. Sectoral indices traded in a mix, with IT dipping the most. Media index gained over 1 per cent. Financial, banks, metal, auto, oil & gas stocks staged resilience.

Coal India, Shriram Finance lead gainers of Nifty 50

Among the Nifty 50 pack, Coal India, Shriram Finance, UltraTech Cement, TMPV and Power Grid led the gainers, while Infosys, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, Bajaj Auto and Eternal dragged the most.

Maruti, MCX, Shriram Finance hit 52-week high

Market breadth was mixed with 3,136 stocks traded on the National Stock Exchange at 1 pm. Advancing shares outnumbered declines, with 1,818 stocks gaining against 1,190 losers, while 128 stocks remained unchanged. As many as 85 stocks, featuring Maruti Suzuki, MCX, Eicher Motors, Shriram Finance and JK Tyre, touched their 52-week highs, compared with 36 (including hitting fresh 52-week lows. Meanwhile, 65 stocks were locked in the upper circuit, whereas 35 stocks hit the lower circuit.



Cholamandalam Investment & railway stocks rally

Among the midcap index, NMDC, RVNL, IREDA, Vodafone Idea and Mankind Industries gained 2-4 per cent, while Coforge, M&M Financial, Fortis Healthcare, BSE and Federal Bank declined 1-5 per cent.

Under the smallcap basket, Jupiter Wagons, Ircon International, IFCI, NCC and Affle zoomed 3-13 per cent, while Neuland Laboratories, Kajaria Ceramics, MGL, Aegis Vopak and Whirlpool fell 2-3 per cent.

On the BSE, Jupiter Wagons, Ircon, Nazara, Railtel and Cholamandalam Investment rallied 7-13 per cent. Rajest Exports, Coforge, Cigniti Tech, Patel Engineering and Mrs Bectors Food dragged up to 5 per cent.
