Stock market holiday on Muharram: Are NSE and BSE open for trading on June 26?

If you are planning to buy or sell shares on Friday, June 26, it is worth checking the trading calendar first. Indian stock markets will remain closed on the day in observance of Muharram, giving traders and investors a long weekend.

Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will suspend trading across multiple segments for the holiday. Regular trading will resume on Monday, June 29.

The NSE and BSE have designated June 26, 2026, as a trading holiday for Muharram. As a result, there will be no activity in the equity market throughout the day.

Trading in equity derivatives, currency derivatives, Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB), and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) will also remain suspended. Investors will be able to resume trading in these segments once the markets reopen after the holiday.

As the holiday falls on a Friday, it creates a three-day break for traders and investors. Since stock exchanges are already closed on Saturdays and Sundays, trading will remain suspended until the start of next week.

The markets will reopen on Monday, June 29, and follow their usual schedule.

On regular trading days, the Indian stock market operates from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. A pre-open session is held between 9:00 am and 9:15 am to aid price discovery and ensure a smoother market opening.

Following the Muharram holiday, the next scheduled stock market closure will be on September 14, 2026, for Ganesh Chaturthi, leaving a gap of nearly three months without any trading holidays.

Other market holidays later this year include Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10, Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev on November 24, and Christmas on December 25.

Meanwhile, investors can plan their trades accordingly, as trading will resume on Monday, June 29, after the extended weekend.
