Centre pushes GST Appellate Tribunal appeal filing deadline by 1 month

If you were racing to file your GST appeal before the June 30 deadline, there is some relief. The Central government has extended the last date for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) by one month, giving taxpayers more time after a sharp rise in filings caused technical issues on the online portal.

The new deadline is July 31, 2026, replacing the earlier deadline of June 30, 2026, which had been notified in September last year.

The government said the decision was taken after receiving requests from various stakeholders. Many had reported technical problems on the GSTAT portal as numerous taxpayers tried to file their appeals close to the deadline.

According to the government, the rush in filings increased significantly during the final weeks before the deadline, putting heavy pressure on the online system.

The Ministry of Finance said around 30,000 appeals were filed during the last 15 days before the original deadline.

On the busiest days, the GSTAT portal received nearly 5,500 appeal filings in a single day. The heavy traffic led to technical difficulties, prompting the government to give taxpayers additional time.

While announcing the extension, the government reminded taxpayers that the original deadline had already been notified on September 17, 2025, giving them several months to prepare.

It also advised taxpayers to avoid waiting until the last moment to file their appeals. Filing well before the deadline, the government said, will help reduce pressure on the GSTAT portal and ensure a smoother submission process.
