Tamil Nadu is emerging as a key market for the six-year-old electric two-wheeler BGauss due to the State’s strong automotive ecosystem, expanding EV adoption and growing penetration in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns.
This is creating a wider base for electric mobility, said its founder Hemant Kabra. The company has sold around one lakh scooters across India, with about 20 per cent of its sales, covering both B2B and B2C segments, coming from Tamil Nadu, he told
BGauss, which sells its vehicle – BG Oowah, BG RUV 350 and BG Max C12 at prices over ₹1.22 lakh – currently has 29 active dealerships across Tamil Nadu, each supported by a workshop, he said. In July, the company sold 5,518 electric scooters across India, he added.
The company sees Tamil Nadu as distinctive because it combines a large two-wheeler market with a strong automotive manufacturing and engineering ecosystem. Chennai, Hosur, Krishnagiri and Coimbatore provide manufacturing capabilities, a deep supplier base and technical talent, helping improve confidence among customers, dealers and financing partners.
While Chennai and Coimbatore remain important centres for EV adoption, the market is increasingly expanding into Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns. BGauss said the availability of dependable dealerships and service support is emerging as one of the strongest drivers of adoption beyond the major cities.
Tamil Nadu buyers are increasingly looking at electric scooters as practical alternatives to petrol two-wheelers rather than simply as new technology, Kabra said. Range in real-world conditions, service accessibility, battery warranty, financing and overall ownership costs are among the key purchase considerations.
The adoption trend is also spreading beyond the larger cities, he added. In Chennai and Coimbatore, EVs are being purchased both as replacements for petrol scooters and as additional household vehicles. Daily commuting economics and applications such as food and grocery delivery are among the key demand drivers.
In semi-urban and smaller markets, however, the presence of a trusted local dealer, accessible service and financing support plays a bigger role in the purchase decision. The company said network expansion and EV adoption tend to move together in these markets.
