Kolkata is now among the country’s top four hubs for kidswear makers in terms of sales on the Flipkart platform and is the fastest-growing, with the number of sellers on the platform nearly doubling.
“Delhi, Tirupur, and Surat are growing at a lesser rate as compared to Kolkata. What is happening is the number of sellers that we acquired from Kolkata last year has now almost doubled, and right now we are acquiring nearly 2X more the number of sellers. Now, that is very encouraging,” Kapil Thirani, Vice President, Marketplace and Shopsy, Flipkart, told businessline.
The e-commerce giant currently has around 5,300 kidswear sellers from West Bengal on its platform. And, around 90 per cent of these sellers are from Kolkata. The Kolkata-based kidswear sellers are witnessing around 30 per cent year-on-year growth in sales.
“Interestingly, in kids’ clothing, what is happening is the purchase is becoming more occasion-led. So, during this year’s IPL we saw around 150 percent increase in the number of kids jerseys being sold. And, Janmashtami for us was hugely successful. From last year, Kolkata sellers had started selling a lot more Janmashtami clothes,” Thirani said. Unbranded adult denim from Kolkata is also gaining traction nationwide.
Flipkart expects total sales of Santipuri heritage sarees through its online marketplace to exceed ₹140 crore this year, on the back of tripled seller count and strong national demand, with Bengaluru and Delhi being the leading markets.
Santipur, a historical Bengal town, is a centuries-old hub for exquisite handloom sarees, with the rich artistry of intricately handwoven and featherlight sarees passed down through generations of weavers.
Notably, the e-commerce company has adopted an on-ground initiative for providing institutional support to weavers and sellers of these famed Tant, handloom and Jamdani sarees. “There are around 780 sellers now from Santipur who are able to get some transactions going on Flipkart, which is a very very good story,” Thirani added.
Last year, total sales of Santipuri sarees through its online marketplace stood at around ₹70 crore. Weaver and seller base was over 250 in January, 2026.
