ASML to expand India presence as Tata Electronics fab takes shape

ASML is stepping up its presence in India as the country moves towards building its first 300 mm semiconductor fab, with the Dutch semiconductor equipment maker planning to expand its customer support, supplier and broader ecosystem footprint, a senior executive said on Thursday.

Earlier this year, Tata Electronics and ASML signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India. Through this partnership, ASML will enable the establishment and ramp-up of Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm (12 inch) semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat.

Delivering a keynote at SEMICON India 2026, Allan Wayne, Chief Strategic Sourcing and Procurement Officer at ASML, said the company’s presence in India had been limited until the Tata Electronics semiconductor fab gave it a customer base to support.

‘Semiconductor powerhouse’

“The industry would talk about chips for automation, electrification, and vehicles. Now we talk about using AI everywhere. AI boosts the requirements and the capacity needed for all other segments because AI is fed by sensors and data from different applications. AI is likely to push the global semiconductor industry to at least $1.6 trillion by 2030. As we look at our supply chain, and enabling not just Tata, we see an opportunity for India to take its place as a semiconductor powerhouse and start producing semiconductor chips here,” Wayne noted.

ASML sees significant potential for India as the country seeks to expand domestic semiconductor production. Wayne said India’s semiconductor market could reach $110-120 billion by 2030, while the country’s ambitions would require several fabs to be built over the coming years.

He said India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions would initially be driven by mainstream technologies rather than only advanced-node chips.



Wayne said there remained substantial innovation in technologies at 28 nm and above, including analogue, mainstream logic, power, sensors, NAND and advanced packaging.

By 2028, the Tata fab is expected to be operational. By 2032, India aims to meet 15-25% of its semiconductor demand through domestic wafer fabs, requiring several fabs. By 2035, the target rises to 35-50%, potentially requiring a dozen fabs or more.

Building supply chain

However, Wayne stressed that ASML currently has no plans for manufacturing in India and that building the supply chain would need to come first.

“At some point, we may be looking at manufacturing, but there are no plans for that as it stands. We need to build a supply chain before we consider a manufacturing presence here,” he said.

Wayne said the immediate priority was ensuring Tata’s first 300 mm fab can qualify production, achieve good quality and yield, and stay on schedule.

“That time to market and our ability to deliver on time are what people are looking for. You will soon see more of our customers coming to India.”
