Amazon bets big on AmazonNow quick commerce, likely to shut Fresh in top cities: Report

is set to expand its quick commerce arm AmazonNow to 10-15 cities, according to a report by UBS.

AmazonNow, currently live in six cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune, is adding roughly two dark stores every day, taking its total count to approximately 450, according to the report.

At that pace, UBS estimates the network will reach 1,000-1,200 dark stores by end-2026, with a medium-term target of 1,600-1,800 stores across 10-20 cities.

Amazon Fresh, which currently operates in around 120 cities with a 4-24 hour delivery window, will be discontinued in the top 10-20 cities where AmazonNow takes over, the report said.

The QC service, focused on 10-minute delivery of FMCG products, is next expected to launch in Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Lucknow

A detailed query has been shared with the company by Businessline which did not elicit a response till the time of printing.

Coverage, however, remains uneven. The reported noted that the comprehensive coverage only in Bengaluru, 60-70 per cent coverage in Mumbai and Delhi, and just 20-30% in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune.

On order metrics, the report noted that the 80 dark stores older than six months, concentrated largely in Bengaluru, are clocking 1,000-1,100 orders per day, approaching Swiggy Instamart’s network average of 1,034 orders per dark store as of Q3FY26.

Across the full network, however, the average is 700-900 orders per day, implying a total of 300,000-400,000 daily orders — well behind Blinkit’s 2.6 million and Swiggy’s 1.2 million.

Average order value stands at ₹260-300, lower than peers, largely because the platform has only recently begun adding categories beyond FMCG such as electronics and toys.

On operations, UBS noted that last-mile delivery is handled by Shadowfax and dark store technology sourced from Loadshare, while Amazon’s 49% stake in More Retail serves as a key supply and hyperlocal sourcing enabler.
