BPCL, OIL form joint venture for city gas distribution in Arunachal Pradesh

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Oil India Limited (OIL) signed a joint venture agreement today to establish city gas distribution infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh. The agreement was formalised at BPCL’s Mumbai corporate office in the presence of senior executives from both Maharatna public sector enterprises.

The joint venture company will develop compressed natural gas (CNG) stations and piped natural gas (PNG) supply networks for domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers across the state. This project stems from the BPCL-OIL consortium’s successful bid in the 12th City Gas Distribution Bid Round conducted by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board.

BPCL Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Khanna emphasised the company’s commitment to expanding clean energy access in northeastern India, stating the initiative will drive sustainable growth and improve quality of life. OIL’s Chairman, Ranjit Rath, highlighted the company’s existing hydrocarbon production legacy in Arunachal Pradesh and referenced last year’s commissioning of the Kumchai-Kusijan gas pipeline as reinforcing its regional presence.

The partnership aligns with the Indian government’s vision of developing a gas-based economy and enhancing socio-economic development in the northeastern region. BPCL operates refineries with 35.3 million metric tonnes per annum capacity and maintains over 23,500 fuel stations nationwide, while OIL brings established upstream operations experience in the region.

The shares of BPCL ended on the NSE today at ₹312.90, down ₹2.90 or 0.92 per cent, and those of OIL ended at ₹397.80, down ₹11.55 or 2.82 per cent.
