The domestic market has sourced on renewed investor confidence, largely propelled by interest in banking, financial and tech stocks.
After a flat opening at 81,274.79, climbed 623.11 pts or 0.77 per cent to 81,830.28 at 1.32 pm, hitting an intraday high of 81,842.80. gained 181.70 pts or 0.73 per cent to 25,075.95, close to the day’s high of 25,085.65 against the previous close of 24,894.25.
The midcap segment outperformed the smallcap index, gaining 0.50 per cent, while the smallcap index saw a modest rise of 0.10 per cent. On the sectoral front, the Nifty IT index surged nearly 2 per cent and banking and financial indices advanced over 1 per cent. All indices traded in positive territory except for metals, media, FMCG, and pharma.
The heavyweight banking and financial stocks climbed after strong quarterly business updates from lenders over the weekend. Major lenders like Kotak Mahindra and HDFC posted robust Q2 metrics — especially in deposit mobilisation and loan growth — which has reassured investors about future earnings momentum.
IT stocks are also contributing to the broader market rally. The Nifty IT index is up as heavyweight names like TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, and Wipro are seeing buying interest. Early optimism around TCS’s upcoming results is also fueling speculative inflows into the sector.
Top gainers & losers today
Among the Sensex pack, , Shriram Finance, Apollo Hospitals, , , Axis Bank and led the gainers, trading 1-3 per cent higher at the time of writing. Shares of , , NTPC, Power Grid and depreciated the most.
A total of 3,125 stocks were traded on the National Stock Exchange at 1.21 pm, with 1,297 advancing, 1,731 declining, and 97 remaining unchanged.
Around 107 stocks such as Aditya Birla Capital, Avalon and, hit their 52-week highs, while 56 stocks, including Genesys International and, hit new 52-week lows. Meanwhile, 98 stocks (including Inox Green) were locked in the upper circuit, compared to 61 shares (including Unimech) in the lower circuit.
Midcap & smallcap movers
Under the midcap segment, Fortis Healthcare, Nykaa, BSE, Paytm, Tata Communications, IDFC First Bank and AU Small Finance Bank surged 3-7 per cent. Vodafone Idea, Torrent Power, Premier Energies, Kalyan Jewellers, IREDAa and Biocon depreciated 2-4 per cent.
Smallcap stocks such as Delhivery, Karur Vysya Bank, Aster DM, GoDigit, Nuvama and Angel One gained 2-4 per cent, while Aegis Logistics, Aegis Vopak, Aditya Birla Real Estate, Anant Raj, Crompton and Zen Tech declined 2-5 per cent.
On the BSE, KIOCL rallied 18 per cent. Emcure, Fortis, Globus Spirits and Anup posted significant gains of 7 per cent. On the losing side were Sammaan Capital, Aegis Logistics, Vodafone Idea and HCC, down 4-5 per cent.
Investors will also keep an eye on two large IPOs this week — Tata Capital and LG Electronics India. TCS set to announce second quarter results on October 9.
