Infighting in Tata Sons’ boardroom has snowballed into a fierce social media clash between Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.

The social media exchange erupted following infighting in Tata Sons’ boardroom. Gandhi had, earlier in the day, alleged that the Tata Group was being “criminally destroyed” under government pressure, claiming that business leaders were too afraid to speak out.

Hitting back at the Congress leader, Sitharaman asserted that being the Leader of the Opposition does not give him licence to politicise every issue.

“You have repeatedly decried the successes of Indian industry & our entrepreneurs. Now, are you trying to incite our business leaders to join you in spreading distrust & toxicity? For decades, your party smothered the spirit of Indian entrepreneurs under the stifling ‘Licence-Quota Raj’ & inflicted poverty on crores of Indians,” she posted on social media.

Modi government values Indian industry

The Minister further emphasised that the Modi government values Indian industry as job creators and economic drivers, stating that policies have been tailored to enable enterprise and encourage investment.

Urging Gandhi to engage constructively rather than casting baseless aspersions for narrow political motives, she noted that the judiciary is constitutionally entrusted with upholding justice. “History is witness to the shoddy manner in which you, your party, and the PMs belonging to your party have demeaned the judiciary. So, Rahul ji, refrain from seeing ghosts everywhere,” she concluded.

However, the debate did not end there.

In a swift counter-response, Rahul Gandhi posed two sharp questions to the government: first, asking what “legal and commercial matter” required Tata Trusts and Tata Sons to be hosted at Amit Shah’s residence; and second, inquiring when “crony number 1” would enter the picture to acquire pieces of the conglomerate.

“All of India’s businesses, except 3-4 of your cronies, already hate all of you and don’t need any incitement,” Gandhi added.
