climbing over 370 pts to 81,100 level and the held firm above 24,850. Sensex traded 284.12 pts or 0.35 per cent higher at 81,071.42 as at 1.15 pm, hitting an intraday high of 81,162.07. Nifty 50 rose by 86 pts or 0.35 per cent to 24,859.15.
Smallcap index was up 0.20 per cent, while midcap index traded flat.
Gains were led by the IT sector, with Infosys surging over 4 per cent on the back of a proposed share buyback, boosting investor sentiment across Dalal Street.
Nifty IT index increased by 2.5 per cent. Telecom, pharma, healthcare, FMCG and metal followed with modest gains. Meanwhile, banking, realty, consumer durables, auto and oil & gas indices dipped.
Top gainers & losers intraday
Among the Sensex firms, Infosys, Wipro, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Tech Mahindra and Adani Ports led the gainers of Nifty 50, while Trent and Eternal declined over 1 per cent. Jio Financial, Titan and Hero Motocorp were other major laggards.
About 2,991 stocks were traded on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing, with 1,458 advancing, 1,433 declining, and 100 remaining unchanged.
Nearly 94 stocks, including Aditya Birla Capital, Eicher Motors, Cartrade Tech and Cummins India, hit 52-week highs and 32 at 52-week lows. 73 stocks were locked in the upper circuit and 53 stocks, along with Moschip Technologies, hit the lower circuit.
Midcap & smallcap performers
Tata Communications, Glenmark Pharma, Tube Investment, Coforge and Mphasis soared 2-4 per cent under the midcap segment, while Nykaa, Paytm, Bharat Forge and Polycab India dropped 1-3 per cent.
Smallcap stocks such as ACE, Affle 3i, The Great Eastern Shipping Company, RailTel and Titagarh Rail Systems gained 4-5 per cent. Delhivery, Chambal Fertilizers, ITI, Narayana Hrudayalaya and Anantraj declined 2-3 per cent.
On the BSE, Sula Vineyards, Gujarat Fluorochemicals, Laxmi Organic Industries, Ujjivan SFB and TBO Tek rallied 6-9 per cent, while Moschip, Refex, STL Tech, JP Power and Shilpa Med dragged 3-10 per cent.
