Stock Markets closed today for Christmas, marking last trading holiday of 2025

Stock makets in India are closed today (Thursday) on account of Christmas, marking it the last trading holiday in 2025. All trading activity including equities, equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLBs), currency derivatives and commodities trading will be suspended today in NSE, BSE and MCX.

On the banking front, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)-mandated holiday will see all public and private banks close branches nationwide.

Stock market trading and banking in India will resume regular operations on December 26. While most of the stock exchanges will resume operations on December 26 elsewhere in the world, some stock exchanges like Hong Kong Stock Exchange, London Stock Exchange Group will remain closed on December 26 as well for ‘Boxing Day’.

On Wednesday, the BSE Sensex eased 116.14 points—or 0.14 per cent—to finish at 85,408.70, as the Nifty 50 mirrored the caution with a 35.05-point (0.13%) fall to 26,142.10.

Smallcap index outperformed and settled with nearly 0.28 per cent gains, while the midcap index shed 0.60 per cent. The former has registered a fresh high in each of the last four sessions, stressed Sudeep Shah, Head – Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities.

On the sectoral front, most ended in the red. Nifty Media ended as the top sectoral gainer, followed by Nifty Realty. Nifty oil & gas, chemicals, and IT emerged as the top sectoral losers.
