Tata Communications transforms Tamil Nadu lake, boosts water capacity threefold

has successfully revived Nagan Thangal Lake in ’s Upparapalayam village, increasing its water storage capacity from 2.6 million litre to 8.5 million litre, according to an assessment released today by the Watershed Organisation Trust Centre for Resilience Studies.

The shares of Tata Communications Limited were trading at ₹1,864.20 down by ₹51.10 or 2.67 per cent on the at 1.22 pm.

The Project Nanneer initiative, launched in 2022 in partnership with Pitchandikulam Forest, has transformed the neglected 15.01-acre lake into a functioning ecosystem serving nearly 12,000 people, with 60 per cent from marginalised communities. The restoration included desilting four acres to 1.5 meters depth and planting over 4,000 native species.

The W-CReS study documented significant environmental improvements. Groundwater recharge increased threefold to 8.5 million litres annually, while the water spread area expanded from 5.10 hectares to 15.19 hectares during pre-monsoon periods. The catchment area saw barren land decrease by 15 per cent, from 236.11 hectares to 199.39 hectares.

The lake, which had lost nearly 75 per cent of its capacity due to siltation and pollution, now supports 14 fish species, 56 bird species, and 33 butterfly species. The site attracts over 11,500 annual visitors and hosts educational programs for approximately 650 students from 11 schools.

Mukul Kumar, Vice President of EOHS and Sustainability at Tata Communications, said the project demonstrates how restoration efforts aligned with catchment hydrology and community engagement can create lasting impact. The company plans continued monitoring and community engagement to ensure long-term sustainability.
