Tata Steel gets demand notice of ₹1,755 cr for excess coal mining

Tata Steel has received demand notice of ₹1,755 crore for extracting excess coal from its mine in Jharkhand.

The notice was issued by the District Mining Office, Ramgarh, Jharkhand allege extraction of about 162 lakh tonne of mineral coal from the company’s West Bokaro Colliery in excess of the permissible limits during the period FY01 to FY07.

The alleged excess production has resulted in an aggregate demand of ₹1,755 crore, it said.

However, the company said the demand lacks justification and substantive basis.

The company will pursue suitable legal remedies before the appropriate judicial or quasi-judicial forums, said the company.

Shares of the company were up marginally at ₹194 on Monday.
