Tilaknagar Industries Ltd. announced Wednesday a ₹22 crore strategic investment in Black Tiger Distilleries (BTD), the Indian spirits company behind Bodega Suprema No. 5, marking the Mumbai-based IMFL major’s first entry into the tequila category.
The stock was trading at ₹541.60 on NSE, down 0.75 per cent, against a 52-week high of ₹594.55 hit just last week.
Tilaknagar to acquire 30% stake in Black Tiger Distilleries
Under the deal, Tilaknagar will acquire a 30 per cent fully diluted stake in BTD through two tranches, ₹6 crore upfront and ₹16 crore within 12 months. Beyond capital, the company will provide distribution, sales, marketing, supply chain, finance and regulatory support to BTD, leveraging its pan-India network.
Bodega Suprema No. 5 is a range of 100 per cent Blue Weber Agave tequilas crafted and bottled in Jalisco, Mexico. It currently comprises three expressions, Blanco, Reposado and Añejo, priced between ₹4,200 and ₹5,500 per 750ml bottle in Maharashtra. Mohnish Mehta founded BTD in partnership with Mexican tequila producer Productos Finos de Agave and the Mansha Group of Companies, a premium spirits distributor in India.
Investment marks third craft beverage bet
The investment is Tilaknagar’s third in an emerging craft beverage company, following earlier bets on Bartisans and Spaceman Spirits Lab. The company cited India’s rapid tequila market growth as the strategic rationale; according to IWSR, Indian tequila volumes grew at roughly 60 per cent CAGR between 2020 and 2025, with a 13 per cent CAGR forecast through 2030.
Tilaknagar shares gain over 150% in three years
Tilaknagar’s stock has returned approximately 19 per cent year-to-date and over 151 per cent in three years, reflecting sustained investor interest in its premiumisation strategy. The company, founded in 1933, is best known for its brandy brands Mansion House and Courrier Napoleon, and also holds Imperial Blue in its whisky portfolio.
