Top gainers & losers today, 28 Oct: Tata Steel, L&T, SBI among top gainers; Trent, ICICI Bank, Tech Mahindra decline

closed marginally lower on Tuesday after a volatile monthly F&O expiry session, with metal and PSU banking stocks staging a late-hour recovery that helped trim losses, while broader consolidation persisted ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision.

The closed 150.68 points or 0.18 per cent lower at 84,628.16, opening at 84,625.71 against its previous close of 84,778.84. The dipped 29.85 points or 0.11 per cent to 25,936.20, opening at 25,939.95 compared to the previous close of 25,966.05.

The indices swung between gains and losses throughout the session, with the Nifty slipping to an intraday low of 25,810 before recovering sharply in the final hour.

Top gainers

Tata Steel led the advances, rising 2.97 per cent to ₹181.85, supported by strong metal prices and improved demand outlook. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) gained 1.23 per cent to ₹3,972.85, while State Bank of India (SBI) climbed 0.76 per cent to ₹930.25 amid buying in PSU bank counters. Kotak Mahindra Bank advanced 0.54 per cent to ₹2,160.35, and Bharti Airtel added 0.45 per cent to ₹2,090.50 to complete the top five gainers.

Top losers

Trent emerged as the biggest loser, declining 1.54 per cent to ₹4,725.60 on profit booking. ICICI Bank fell 1.05 per cent to ₹1,363.20, followed by Tech Mahindra, which slipped 1.03 per cent to ₹1,447.90. Bajaj Finserv dropped 1.00 per cent to ₹2,148.00, while Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) eased 0.98 per cent to ₹3,576.55.

Metal and banking stocks helped limit losses, while broader indices remained subdued as investors stayed cautious ahead of the Fed’s interest rate outlook.
