India’s April-June fiscal deficit touches Rs 3.1 trillion; government spending rises

India’s fiscal deficit stood at 18.2% of the full-year target during the April-June quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, according to government data released on Friday.

The fiscal deficit for the first three months of the financial year came in at Rs 3.1 trillion. In the same period last year, it stood at Rs 2.8 trillion.

The government has set a fiscal deficit target of Rs 16.96 trillion, or 4.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), for the financial year ending March 31, 2027.



The government’s net tax receipts increased to Rs 6.4 trillion during April-June, compared with Rs 5.4 trillion in the same period last year.

Non-tax revenue also saw a slight rise. It stood at Rs 3.8 trillion, up from Rs 3.7 trillion a year earlier.

The government’s total expenditure during the April-June quarter rose to Rs 13.6 trillion, compared with Rs 12.2 trillion in the corresponding period last year.

Capital expenditure, which includes spending on building physical infrastructure, also increased. It stood at Rs 3.4 trillion during the quarter, compared with Rs 2.75 trillion in the same period of the previous financial year.
