The stock market will remain open for trading on Friday, August 28, despite across the country.

Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will operate as usual, as the festival does not feature in the exchanges’ 2026 trading holiday calendar.

This means investors can buy and sell shares as normal, with trading continuing across the equity and equity derivatives segments. Currency derivatives, NDS-RST and Tri Party Repo segments will also remain operational.

Under normal market timings, the pre-open session begins at 9 am, while regular equity trading runs from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm.

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) are scheduled to function normally. Trading will continue across the relevant commodity segments as per their regular schedules.

The next scheduled stock market holiday is September 14, when exchanges will remain closed for Ganesh Chaturthi.

After that, the other upcoming market holidays in 2026 are:

October 2 — Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti

October 20 — Dussehra

November 10 — Diwali-Balipratipada

November 24 — Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev

December 25 — Christmas

A total of 16 stock market holidays are scheduled for 2026, of which 10 had already passed by August 28.

The market heads into Friday’s session after a weak close on Thursday, August 27.

The Sensex fell 539.35 points, or 0.70%, to settle at 76,933.59, while the Nifty 50 declined 116.90 points, or 0.48%, to close at 24,090.85.

Broader markets also ended lower, with the Nifty Midcap 100 falling 0.10% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 declining 0.13%. Most sectoral indices finished in negative territory, while Pharma, Healthcare and Consumer Durables were among the sectors that managed to remain positive. Nifty PSU Bank was the biggest laggard, ending nearly 1% lower.

The market also witnessed a sharp decline towards the end of Thursday’s session, which coincided with the first monthly expiry after the introduction of the Closing Auction Session.

So, while Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated across India on Friday, it is business as usual for Dalal Street, with NSE and BSE remaining open for trading.
