August 2026 was not only the biggest-ever August for overall vehicles retail sales in India, but for electric mobility too, across categories that reached 2,98,448 units, up 53 per cent year-on-year (YoY), taking overall electric vehicle (EV) penetration to 12.3 per cent, from 9.5 per cent a year ago.
In August last year, the total retail sales across categories of EVs was recorded at 1,95,250 units. Remarkably, every one of the four EV categories set a fresh August record — there was not one that did not, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) said on Tuesday.
In the electric passenger vehicle (PV) sales, Tata Motors continued to lead the market, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and JSW MG Motor. Newcomer VinFast has secured the fourth position just within a year of its entry into the country, with sales of 2,199 units, followed by Maruti Suzuki India with just one vehicle (e Vitara) retailing 1,412 units in August.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles sold 13,158 units during the month, a growth of 63 per cent YoY as compared with 8,064 units in the same month last year. Similarly, M&M grew by 56 per cent in its electric PV sales to 6,464 units in August as compared with 4,139 units in the corresponding month last year.
However, JSW MG Motor’s sales declined by 17.77 per cent YoY to 4,622 units in August as compared with 5,621 units in August 2025, though still holding the third position in the sales rankings.
Overall, the total retail sales of electric PVs grew by around 52 per cent YoY to 30,696 units during last month as compared with 20,210 units in August 2025, the monthly data shared by FADA said.
In the electric two-wheelers category, TVS Motor Company sold the most with 48,938 units, recording a growth of 91 per cent YoY as against 25,646 units in August last year. Bajaj Auto followed with sales of 41,114 units, which was more than triple the sales of 12,246 units in August 2025.
Ather Energy recorded sales of 28,757 units, up around 50 per cent YoY as compared with 19,210 units in August 2025. Hero MotorCorp followed with 19,007 units as against 13,769 units in the same month last year.
The total electric two-wheeler sales grew by 67 per cent YoY to 1,83,204 units in August as compared with 1,09,673 units in the corresponding month last year.
In the electric three-wheeler segment, the total sales grew by 25.28 per cent YoY to 79,846 units as compared with 63,736 units in August 2025. The electric commercial vehicle sales also almost tripled to 4,702 units last month as compared with 1,631 units in the same month 2025
.Commenting on the EV sales performance, Sai Giridhar, President, FADA, said, “The clear standout is Electric Commercial Vehicles, which touched an all-time monthly high of 4,702 units — the single best month in our entire series — nearly trebling year-on-year to a 5.18 per cent share, as fleet electrification moves decisively from pilots to purchase orders. Electric two-wheelers, up 67 per cent YoY, held above 10 per cent penetration even in a seasonally soft, non-festive month and now account for over 60 per cent of all EV retails; three-wheelers remain structurally electric at 65.3 per cent, and Passenger EVs grew 52 per cent to a 7.6 per cent share.
