Every great structure begins with someone’s dream. Sometimes one person dreams it, while another takes on the task of turning it into reality. The story of Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery is much like that. It is the story of a father’s dream and a son’s decision. It is also a story of the speed that helped redraw India’s industrial map.
Dhirubhai Ambani had a big dream: to build a refinery. The idea had taken deep root in his mind. But not every dream is fulfilled by the person who first imagines it. Sometimes one generation dreams, and the next turns that dream into reality. Dhirubhai’s ambition was eventually realised under the leadership of his son, Mukesh Ambani.
There is a particularly interesting turn in this story. Mukesh Ambani was studying at Stanford at the time, but he returned before completing his course. Imagine how significant a decision it is to leave your studies midway and come back. It would not necessarily have been an easy choice. But there was a major task ahead of him: bringing his father’s dream to life.
Construction of the Jamnagar Refining Complex then began. It was completed in record time—in just 36 months.
When we think of a project on such a vast scale, we often assume it will take years and years to complete. Jamnagar set a new benchmark for speed. Thirty-six months—just three years. Turning such a large dream into reality in so little time is no easy feat. It takes more than hard work; it requires clarity of thought, determination and courage.
The refinery built in Jamnagar is India’s largest. The project is regarded as an example of the industrial ambition that would go on to become a defining part of Reliance’s identity.
Three ideas that became part of Reliance’s identity
All three continue to be visible in the way Reliance operates today.
Jamnagar was only the beginning. Reliance’s journey moved beyond its industrial foundations into the worlds of digital services and technology. Investments in digital infrastructure, technology and next-generation capabilities are driven by a larger ambition: to build businesses in India that can compete globally.
This also raises a broader question: how can Indian enterprises contribute to the country’s economic and technological aspirations? Reliance’s journey has continued to explore an answer.
After turning his father’s dream into reality, Reliance faced a new question: once the country’s largest refinery had been built, what should the next big dream be? The answer was to make communication easy and affordable for every Indian.
That answer was Jio.
