has has issued a notice to SAJ Food Products following a consumer complaint regarding misleading claims on its “Eat Fit Digestive Biscuits” product. The food safety regulator has direced the manufacturer to furnish an explanation within seven days.
According to FSSAI, the complaint alleged that the product’s front label claimed “100% Atta,” while the ingredients list reportedly mentioned only 72.33 per cent atta, raising concerns over potentially misleading claims.
FSSAI obeserved several non-compliances by the manufacturer including misleading “no added sugar” claim since the product contains malodextrines and glucose syrup solids. It also stated that the “100 per cent atta” claim is misleading since the product consists of other ingredients and additives.
It also added that the products labels is not in compliance with its advisory on removal of “100 per cent claims”.
“ The product name Eat Fit Digestive was found to require scientific justification under the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018,” the FSSAI noted.
The food safety regulator has been in the process of cracking down on various companies for non-compliance with labelling and claims regulation. In the past few weeks, it has sent notices to several companies regarding misleading claims and labels.
