will invest around ₹2,000 crore to set up a large power transformer manufacturing facility at Karjan in Vadodara, marking one of the biggest investments in India’s power equipment sector.
The new plant, scheduled to be operational by FY28, is expected to manufacture a significant volume of large power transformers annually and support applications ranging from high-voltage transmission corridors and HVDC projects to AI data centres, power generation facilities and large industrial installations. Hitachi Energy said the new factory would strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities amid rising demand for transformers driven by grid expansion, industrial electrification, renewable energy integration and the rapid growth of data centres.
“This investment reflects our confidence in India’s energy future and the country’s growing stature as a strategic manufacturing base. By expanding our manufacturing presence, we aim to empower local communities, create skilled jobs and deliver innovative solutions that support the country’s energy and sustainability goals,” stated N Venu, Managing Director and CEO of Hitachi Energy India in an official release.
The facility will complement the company’s existing transformer manufacturing footprint in , which includes power, dry distribution and traction transformer factories, as well as transformer insulation and component manufacturing facilities at Mysore and Halol. The company said the factory would be developed as a fully digital manufacturing facility integrating smart manufacturing technologies and end-to-end digital connectivity to improve productivity, quality control and operational efficiency.
The plant is also being designed as a LEED-certified facility with a focus on energy efficiency, responsible resource utilisation and reduced environmental impact. It will incorporate advanced manufacturing technologies alongside stringent health, safety and sustainability standards. “This new factory will strengthen our ability to serve customers locally while contributing to India’s self-reliance and infrastructure development,” stated Bruno Melles, CEO of Hitachi Energy’s Transformers Business Unit.
The project is expected to generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs and boost local supplier ecosystems in Gujarat. The investment forms part of Hitachi Energy’s global capacity expansion programme covering manufacturing, engineering, research and development, and strategic partnerships to meet growing electricity demand worldwide.
The company said the announcement reinforces its long-term commitment to India’s “Make in India” initiative and energy transition ambitions. Hitachi Energy has been operating in India for 77 years and has played a key role in several critical power infrastructure projects, including the commissioning of one of the world’s largest urban HVDC city-centre infeed systems in Mumbai.
