Indian automobile sales record highest-ever sales in FY26, first time after FY19: SIAM

The Indian automobile wholesales (dispatches to dealers) have grown by double digits in all four major segments – passenger vehicle (PVs), two-wheelers (2Ws), three-wheelers (3Ws) and commercial vehicles (CVs), with total sales of 2,82,65,519 units in financial year 2025-26 (FY26).

As per the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the grand total of all categories grew by 10.4 per as compared with 2,56,09,399 units in FY25.

The industry body said that the last time when all the segments posted highest-ever sales was in FY2018-19.

Meanwhile, SIAM also noted that although the outlook for the ongoing fiscal year is positive considering the strong fundamentals of the economy, if the West Asia war prolongs, it could have an impact of demand, supply chain and vehicle production.

“Uncertainties arising from the West Asia conflict, particularly prices of crude oil and commodities, higher exchange rates and disruptions in shipping routes, remains a concern for the auto sector. Stable geopolitical environment will help build confidence of the industry, which can in turn drive further growth in 2026-27,” Shailesh Chandra, President, SIAM, told reporters, while sharing the numbers.

Positive sentiments

Having said that he also added that positive sentiments created through GST 2.0 reforms and repo rate cut remain.

Talking about performance in FY26, Chandra said though FY2025-26 started modestly, the Indian auto industry has closed the year on a high note with every vehicle category — passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers, together posting their highest-ever sales in a financial year, after seven years.

“In FY2025-26, passenger vehicles posted sales of 46.43-lakh units with a growth of 7.9 per cent, commercial vehicles posted sales of 10.80-lakh units with a growth of 12.6 per cent, three-wheelers posted sales of 8.36-lakh units with a growth of 12.8 per cent, and wwo-wheelers posted sales of 2.17 crore units, with a growth of 10.7 per cent, over FY2024-25,” Chandra added.

In terms of exports, both PVs and 2Ws recorded their highest-ever exports in FY26. PV exports grew by 17.5 per cent at more than of 9.05-lakh units in FY26 as compared with around 7.70plakh in FY25. The demand has been steady across most markets including in the West Asia, Africa and Latin America last year, SIAM noted.

Two Wheelers exports reached more than 51.8-lakh units in FY26 with a growth of 23.4 per cent against more than 41.98 lakh units in FY25. “Wider product range and recognition of Indian 2W brands and its robust quality is increasing acceptance globally. Further, the depreciated value of Rupee is also helping the exports volumes,” SIAM added.
