Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi are set to jointly inaugurate Maruti Suzuki India’s new manufacturing facility at Kharkhoda in Haryana on Wednesday, marking one of the biggest investments in India’s automobile sector in recent years.
The Kharkhoda plant is ‘s fourth manufacturing facility in India and is expected to significantly boost the country’s passenger vehicle production capacity.
This is the fourth Maruti plant in India and the cumulative cost of all the plants comes to around Rs 35,000 crore. The Gujarat facility is expected to create more than 21,000 direct jobs while adding an annual production capacity of 10 lakh vehicles once fully operational.
The inauguration also underscores the deepening economic partnership between India and Japan, with Maruti Suzuki remaining one of the most successful examples of Japanese investment in India’s manufacturing sector.
Maruti Suzuki is India’s largest passenger vehicle maker, selling nearly one in every two cars bought in the country. As demand for passenger vehicles continues to grow, the company has been expanding its manufacturing footprint to cater to both domestic and export markets.
The Kharkhoda facility is expected to play a key role in helping the automaker meet its long-term production target while strengthening India’s position as a global automobile manufacturing hub.
Once fully operational, the plant will increase Maruti Suzuki’s annual manufacturing capacity by 10 lakh vehicles, making it one of the company’s largest production centres.
The project represents an investment of approximately Rs 35,000 crore and is among the largest greenfield automobile manufacturing investments in the country.
Besides boosting vehicle production, the plant is expected to generate over 21,000 direct employment opportunities. Thousands of additional indirect jobs are also expected to be created through ancillary industries, component manufacturers, logistics providers and local service businesses that typically develop around large automobile factories.
The inauguration comes as India continues to push manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative and aims to become a global production base for automobiles and auto components.
The expansion is expected to strengthen the domestic automotive supply chain, encourage fresh investments by component manufacturers and enhance India’s export capabilities.
The presence of both Prime Minister Modi and his Japanese counterpart at the inauguration also highlights the strategic importance of India-Japan industrial cooperation, particularly in manufacturing and mobility.
With the Kharkhoda facility coming online, Maruti Suzuki is set to significantly expand its production capabilities as it prepares for future demand, including new-generation vehicles and exports.
