extended losses for a fourth consecutive session on Thursday, with the Sensex dropping 663.83 points or 0.78 per cent to 84,297.31 and the Nifty falling 225.40 points or 0.86 per cent to 25,915.35 by afternoon trade after President Donald Trump greenlit a bipartisan Senate bill allowing tariffs up to 500 per cent on countries purchasing Russian oil, gas and uranium.
The opened at 84,778.02 against the previous close of 84,961.14, while the opened at 26,106.50 from 26,140.75. Market breadth remained weak with 2,938 stocks declining against 1,056 advances on the , where 4,189 stocks were traded. As many as 148 stocks hit lower circuit limits compared to 131 in upper circuit, while 127 stocks touched 52-week lows versus 96 at 52-week highs.
Broader markets witnessed sharper losses, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index down 897.75 points or 1.46 per cent to 60,517.05 and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index falling 285.25 points or 1.59 per cent to 17,669.25. The Nifty Next 50 plunged 1,204.65 points or 1.70 per cent to 69,485.95, while sectoral indices Nifty Financial Services declined 195.05 points or 0.70 per cent to 27,659.30 and Nifty Bank shed 316.10 points or 0.53 per cent to 59,675.10.
Among Nifty50 constituents, led gains with a rise of 0.69 per cent to ₹418.50, followed by up 0.43 per cent at ₹1,433.90, advancing 0.41 per cent to ₹2,079.30, gaining 0.37 per cent to ₹1,653.80 and climbing 0.37 per cent to ₹1,470.70.
On the losing side, tumbled 3.46 per cent to ₹906, dropped 2.73 per cent to ₹295.20, declined 2.66 per cent to ₹232.71, fell 2.46 per cent to ₹264.15 and slipped 2.29 per cent to ₹1,162.50.
Experts warned the proposed tariffs under the Sanctioning of Russia Act of 2025 would effectively function as a trade ban, making Indian goods prohibitively expensive for American consumers and threatening key export sectors including pharmaceuticals, textiles, information technology and leather.
