Want to update Aadhaar for free? UIDAI has extended the deadline again

If you have been putting off updating your Aadhaar details, there is some relief. The government has extended the free online Aadhaar document update service for another year, giving people more time to upload and verify their documents without paying any fee.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that Aadhaar holders can continue updating documents linked to their Aadhaar card free of cost through the myAadhaar portal till June 14, 2027. The facility was earlier set to end in June 2026.

According to an office memorandum issued by UIDAI on May 13, 2026, the decision was taken after receiving a positive response from Aadhaar users who have been updating their details online.

The free facility is available only through the myAadhaar portal and applies to document updates related to proof of identity (PoI) and proof of address (PoA).

In simple terms, if your Aadhaar details need supporting documents or you want to refresh records linked to your Aadhaar profile, you can now do it online without paying any fee until June 14, 2027.

UIDAI said in its memorandum: “It has been decided to extend the facility for one more year, i.e., from June 15, 2026, to June 14, 2027.”

However, this free service is only available online. If you visit an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre for document updates, a fee of Rs 75 will still apply.

Updating Aadhaar documents online is fairly simple and can be done through the myAadhaar portal in a few steps.

Users need to log in using their Aadhaar number and OTP verification. After logging in, they can upload scanned copies of valid identity and address proof documents and submit the request online.

Once the process is completed, users should save the 14-digit Update Request Number (URN), which helps track the application status later.

UIDAI has also announced that the and users will gradually move to the new Aadhaar App.

In a post on X, UIDAI said the new app will offer a smarter and more secure experience, including QR-based Aadhaar sharing, better privacy settings and easier access to Aadhaar-related services.

The authority said the new application is designed to make digital identity services simpler and faster for users.

Charges for updating Aadhaar details depend on the type of correction or update required.

Biometric updates such as fingerprints, iris scans and photographs are free for children during certain age-based mandatory updates. For other biometric updates, users may have to pay Rs 125.

Demographic changes, including name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile number or email — are free if updated along with biometric changes. Otherwise, a fee of Rs 75 applies.

For now, document updates through the myAadhaar portal remain completely free till June 14, 2027, making it a good time for Aadhaar holders to review and update their records if needed.
