E-commerce giant Amazon is witnessing around a two-fold year-on-year sales growth, in terms of value, in its two-wheelers category in India, backed by electric vehicles.
“Almost 60 per cent of the mix is electric vehicles right now,” Aman Deep Lohan, Director – Home, Kitchen & Outdoors, Amazon India, told businessline.
The India unit of the e-commerce major started to sell two-wheelers two years ago. It is currently offering over 20 brands. “We are seeing very encouraging growth in the two-wheelers business. The two-wheeler sales growth is 100 per cent compared to last year,” Lohan said.
“Within two-wheelers, we are seeing a very good growth in EVs (electric vehicles) in the last year specifically. This continues to be a trend, which will stay here. So EV are growing faster than the category; they are actually the growth drivers,” he informed.
Amazon said that currently three out of four bike customers are buying from tier II and tier III cities. And, for electric vehicles, demand for seven out of 10 bikes is actually coming from these cities. “So, it is the phenomenon of premiumisation of high-value products online adoption. It is not limited to metro cities; in non-metros, tier II, tier III cities, we are also seeing a very good adoption,” the Director said, adding the sales growth is also backed by the e-commerce company’s focus on delivering the products on the same or next day.
“We are putting in efforts to ensure year-on-year improvement in the speed of delivery to tier II and tier III cities. There has been around 40 per cent improvement in same day delivery compared to last year. So, more than 10 lakh products we can ship and deliver to the customers within the same day,” Lohan said.
Amazon is currently witnessing around 80 per cent year-on-year sales growth in sporting products. Treadmills within that are seeing around 60 per cent growth.
