Mumbai residents woke up to a more expensive September 1. The cost of three everyday essentials — milk, fuel and local transport — has gone up at the same time. CNG and PNG prices have increased, while auto and taxi fares have also been revised. Milk from dairies will now cost more too.
For people who travel by auto or taxi, use CNG vehicles or buy tabela milk, the changes mean a little more spending from today.
Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has raised the price of CNG in Mumbai and surrounding areas by Rs 2 per kg. CNG will now cost Rs 88 per kg.
The company has also increased the price of domestic PNG by Rs 1 per SCM. The revised prices came into effect from midnight on September 1.
MGL said the increase was linked to higher gas prices in international markets amid ongoing tensions in West Asia. The company is having to buy spot RLNG at higher prices, which has pushed up its costs.
The price increase will affect around 13 lakh CNG vehicle owners across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Latur, Dharashiv and Chitradurga-Davanagere in Karnataka. Around 30 lakh domestic PNG consumers will also have to pay more.
Delhi has also seen a recent increase in CNG prices. Indraprastha Gas raised the price by Rs 3.89 to Rs 86.98 per kg.
Getting around Mumbai will also cost more from September 1. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) has approved an increase in auto and taxi fares.
The minimum auto fare has been raised to Rs 27, while the minimum fare for black-and-yellow taxis is now Rs 33.
The taxi fare per kilometre has increased from Rs 20.66 to Rs 21.90. For autos, the per-kilometre fare has gone up from Rs 17.14 to Rs 18.22.
For the first 1.5 kilometres, passengers will now have to pay Rs 33 in a taxi instead of Rs 31.
Drivers have until the end of November to get their meters calibrated according to the new fares. Those who fail to do so could face a fine.
Mumbai has more than 4.5 lakh autos and over 50,000 taxis. The last fare hike came in February 2025, around 18 months ago.
The third hit is on milk. Tabela milk, which earlier cost Rs 93 per litre, is now Rs 9 more expensive and will be sold at Rs 102 per litre.
The revised price will remain in effect until February 28 next year.
Milk producers said the increase was needed because the cost of cattle feed has gone up. Prices of grains, tur chuni and chana chuni have risen by up to 25%.
So, from milk in the morning to the cost of travelling around the city, Mumbai residents will have to spend a little more from September 1.
